Kanheri Caves

The spectacular Caves at Kanheri, north of Bombay, will feature in the sequel to Shantaram.

Anyone who visits Bombay, and who has a day to spare, should definitely visit the Caves. It's a drive of only 3 hours or so from South Bombay, so you can go there and back in a single day. But the Caves are so astoundingly beautiful that you'll want to spend at least 3 hours or so climbing up and down the paths winding through the Caves and the forest that supports them.

It's a fascinating day at any time of the year, but I very much recommend that you visit the caves during the monsoon, if you can. The thousand shades of green you'll find there, after they've been fed by the torrents of the monsoon, are so intoxicating that you'll be thinking and feeling in green for days afterwards. Wear good shoes: the paths are slippery, even in the dry season. And please be careful near the edges of steep slopes: they can give way, and people do sometimes fall into the rivers and gorges that work through the hills of Kanheri.
